BROMSGROVE Tennis Club got their revenge against Droitwich Spa last weekend as their Men’s D Team secured a 3-1 win over their local rivals.

A tough match looked in prospect for Bromsgrove as Droitwich sat second in Division Six and had already defeated their opponents this season.

But the hosts rose to the challenge, with Jack Walters and Pete Morris leading the way with two convincing wins. Bromsgrove’s second pairing of Tim Roland and Mark Blake had a harder time of it, but after losing the first set 6-2, they dug in and routed the opposition 6-3, 6-3.

Stand-in skipper Walters said: “We needed a good win after a poor showing at Bewdley a fortnight ago and to beat a team that defeated our C Team is icing on the cake.

“Everyone put in strong fighting performances and we deserved the victory.”

It was the same score-line for Bromsgrove’s Ladies B Team as they proved too strong for Ross on Wye’s A Team. Hannah Weston and Kelly Kenward were untroubled as they won their first match 6-2, 6-2 before dispatching their next opponents 6-0, 7-5.

Sophie Oliver and Amy Foster went down in a close three set contest, but this came after a 6-3, 6-3 success to seal an impressive win for their team, which delighted captain Weston

“Although we’ve only played three matches we’re putting pressure on the Division leaders who have played at least two more matches but are only a few points ahead of us,” he said.

“We’ve got some crunch matches in the next few weeks but today’s result sets us up well for them.”

Finally, the Ladies G Team made it a hat-trick of victories for Bromsgrove and extended their unbeaten run in Division 11 after winning a thrilling match against Stourport B Team.

They did not get off to the best of starts as Naomi Moore and Sue Corfield lost the final set 7-6 after taking the match into a decider. But the pair, who lost their opening set 6-0, picked themselves up as they ran out 6-2, 6-3 winners in their next clash.

It was also a topsy turvy afternoon for Avril Pugh and Chris Mitchell as they eased to a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win before getting thrashed 6-0, 6-3. With rubbers tied at 2-2, Bromsgrove took the victory as they had won the extra set in Moore and Corfield’s opening match.
