New Droitwich boss not

Bromsgrove Editorial 3rd Oct, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

NEWLY-appointed Droitwich Spa manager Wayne Oliver has insisted he does not have a “magic wand” to solve his struggling side’s problems.

The 52-year-old, who has previously managed Bromyard and Archdales 73, has been joined in the role by Worcester City legend Mark Owen after Colin Rudge and Andy Pheasant stepped down.

Droitwich’s fans will be hoping Oliver and Owen can steer their team clear of the relegation area – as five straight defeats has left Spa at the foot of the Midlands Football League Division Two table.

But Oliver, who will take charge of his first game when Droitwich take on fellow strugglers Coton Green tomorrow, said it was also up to the players to step up to the plate.

“I have turned this job down a couple of times before, but I don’t want to see the club in the state it is in at the moment.” he said. “Droitwich has always been a massive job whoever has been in charge. Obviously this year has seen five defeats in five games, which makes it a little bit harder.

“But we will just keep working at it and see what we can do. We have not got a magic wand and we are only as good as the players.

“We will continue to give the current players a chance to prove their worth and see what they think of us before we start shaping things up here.”

Former managerial duo Pheasant and Rudge will remain at the club, with the latter continuing as a player, while Oliver said he was pleased to have Owen, 37, who works with Worcester City’s academy, on board.

“Mark wants to concentrate on the managerial side of things now so he sees this as an ideal opportunity, so if I can give him a helping hand in that direction then that’s great.” Oliver added.

“He has helped me out as a players over the years, so for me it is a little bit of pay back and hopefully Mark will benefit from that.”

**BROMSGROVE Sporting will be looking to maintain their winning run when they take on Tipton Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase at the Victoria Ground tomorrow.

The Rouslers’ 2-1 win over Alvis Sporting was their third straight league victory and they will be bouyed by Tipton’s form as they have conceded 22 goals in their last three games in the Midlands Football League Premier.
