Moeen 'great contender' to play in second India test

PEARS favourite Moeen Ali has been added to the England squad for the second test against India at Lords.

The 34-year-old has been named in the squad for a home test for the first time since the Ashes opener at Edgbaston two years ago.

Moeen has been chosen as an all-rounder for an England side shorn of Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes and if picked it will be his first appearance since the second match of the India series in February.

He returned match figures of 8-226 in the 317-run defeat while also scoring 49 runs before returning home as part of England’s ‘rest and rotation’ policy.

Since then he’s represented England in limited-overs cricket this summer while being captain of Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred, helping them to the top of the men’s table.

“He’s been called into the squad because of his capabilities with both bat and ball,” said England captain Joe Root. “He’s in serious form at the minute, albeit in the short format, but we all know what he is capable of in the Test arena.

“He’s a great contender to play in the next Test. We haven’t been to the ground yet so we will need to look at conditions and weigh things up but he’s in a great position to potentially play.”

The second test with India begins on Thursday (August 12).
