CRICKET: HIMBLETON Cricket Club 1st XL secured their first win of the season on Saturday as they beat a strong Bartestree and Lugwardine team by five wickets.

After suffering a disappointing start to the season with weather effected games, a young Himbleton side got off the best of starts reducing Bartestree and Lugwardine to 56-5 from 20 over’s with Aaron Jenkins the pick of the early bowlers with two wickets. Ably supported by Mike Rogers, 3 for 23 at the other end Himbleton looked to be in strong position at the drinks break.

However, a sensible partnership enabled Bartestree and Lugwardine to reach a well below score of 126 before Tom Brooks, 2 for 8, and George Clifton 2 for 11 ripped out the lower order.

Stu Dickenson chipped in with a brilliant catch at the end of the innings to add to his single wicket to give Himbleton an achievable target of 126.

After a classy start from Jon Critchlow and Stu Bailey, Himbleton raced to 68 without loss.

When Critchlow was trapped lbw for an eye catching 28, Himbleton suffered an alarming collapse as they went from 79 -1 to 81-5 as Dickenson was caught for a match defining 35, to be followed by a hat-trick from Matt Ashcroft as he ripped out the Brace brothers, with Luke Brace suffering the indignity of receiving a first ball duck.

Not to allow his team mate to suffer this on his own, Rick Pretty also fell first ball as Himbleton lost four wickets in five balls.

When the experienced Mike Rogers came in, Himbleton played sensible cricket, with Ali Pretty playing a confident and classy innings as he ticked over the run rate, taking advantage of the rare poor ball.

Once Rogers managed to adapt to the pace of the wicket, he too started to score freely and Himbleton soon managed to reach the target with over 14 overs to spare.

Ali Pretty finished on a smooth 26 not out with Rogers on a confident 20 not out.

Himbleton now face Claverley next week at Himbleton’s Meadow Ground as they look to stop Claverley’s 100 per cent start to the season.
