Goals galore on opening weekend of Combination season

AFTER the abandonment of last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Redditch & South Warwickshire Combination was back up and running on Sunday.

SSS Lions and Feckenham Sunday both got off to a flying start – scoring eight and ten goals respectively.

SSS Lions, who were strong contenders for the league title last year, hosted South Redditch at Studley Sports & Social Club and SSS dominated as Jay Gifford bagged a hat-trick.

The other goalscorers were Ben Ellicott (2) Joe Hunter (2) and Brendan Hicks as SSS won 8-0.

Feckenham Sunday cruised to a 10-2 victory at Redditch Town thanks to goals from Jack Smith, Connor Perry-Holmes (2), Jake Donnelly (2), George Tolley, Robbie Davies (2), Daniel Williams and Jack Dawkins.

Amin Cummings and Ash Donaldson scored for the hosts.

AFC Thomas Brothers, previously CBH Fasteners, started with a 3-0 win at Beoley Village. AFC led 2-0 at half-time and then converted a penalty late on to secure all three points through goals from Sean Parish (2) and Nath Davies.

Astwood FC took on league newcomers Wythall Lions and goals from Matt Fonyodi (2), Josh Bowen and Ben Baker sealed the points for hosts Astwood. Conor Doyle was on the mark for Wythall in a 4-1 defeat.

Redditch United Cross hosted Frankley United at the Trico Stadium and it was Cross who emerged victorious as a hat-trick from Kyle Perkins and goals from Ben Rogers and Lee Aldridge sealed a 5-1 success. Callum Bissett netted for United.

Four goals from Will Skelton and further strikes from Alex Birch, George Skelton and Ethan Rupenthal were enough to guide Redditch Borough to a thrilling 7-4 victory at AFC Windmill, for whom Andy Seager scored a hat-trick and Daniel Bowen also struck.

A brace from Mal Williams was not enough to prevent VKL United suffering a 3-2 home loss to Studley Lions whose goals were scored by Richard Tyler, Stuart Rowland and an own goal.
