Contract imminent for Bromsgrove Sporting boss Smith

MANAGER Paul Smith could soon put pen to paper after Bromsgrove Sporting chairman Mike Burke confirmed a contract was with solicitors.

At Monday’s supporters’ forum, one fan questioned whether the Rouslers boss would be given a contract as a reward for his efforts over the last year-and-a-half.

Burke responded immediately, stating that one had been drawn up but just needed checking over before it could be signed.

The news of a contract had been in the pipeline for some months after board members voted 14-0 in favour of offering a two-year deal to Smith at a club meeting in October.

Smith was expected to sign the paperwork in November but the process had not been completed by then.

And it was only until the forum that Smith had heard, officially, a contract had been drawn up and that it was in the hands of solicitors.

“It was a strange one really as I heard nothing after November,” Smith told the Standard.

“I heard drips that it was still being processed but I heard nothing more until the forum when it came to fruition one had actually been drawn up.

“If and when it is offered to me, I will sit down with my relevant people and decide if I shall sign it or not.”

After taking over in late 2014, the former Studley gaffer missed out on promotion from Midland League Division One in his first two seasons as chief, falling short to Highgate United and Coventry United respectively.

However, 2017 was the year he fired Sporting to title glory with the club finishing as ‘Invincibles’, winning 33 of their 38 league games.

Alongside their league success, Smith guided the club to the semi-finals of the FA Vase, narrowly missing out on a Wembley appearance at the hands of Cleethorpes Town.

Following that eventful campaign, Smith and the rest of the Sporting team have started life in the Midland League Premier Division superbly, with the Rouslers sitting second with a game in hand on league leaders Coleshill Town.

And with Coleshill in FA Vase action on Saturday, Sporting know victory at Stourport Swifts will send them top of the pile.

Sporting are also once again on the hunt for a Wembley appearance after booking their place in the last 16 of the FA Vase on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over United Counties League Premier outfit Wisbech Town.

The victory set up a tie against Hellenic League side Thatcham Town on Saturday, February 3.
