Bromsgrove Tennis Club's Ladies' A team in title battle after key win

Bromsgrove Tennis Club enjoyed a week to remember as five of its seven teams recorded victories in the Hereford and Worcestershire League.

Three of the wins came without dropping a rubber.

In Division One, the Ladies A swept aside hosts Droitwich A 6-0. The pairs of Imogen Sinclair with Veronika Kumherova, Ann Banner with Katherine Smedley and Sally Franks only dropped one set in a comprehensive win. It was a great parting result for Kumherova who played her last match before returning to the Czech Republic.

The win secures second place and potentially top spot depending on other results.

The Mixed B team were 4-0 winners at Inkberrow A in Division Three East after a really tight match.

First pair Debbie Oliver with Jeth Tomlinson opened with a tight three-set win before wrapping up a straightforward two-set victory. The second pair of Beccy Smith with George Rogers won a third-set tiebreak in a tough opener and they then hit back from being a set and 1-5 down to take a stunning victory in another third-set tiebreak.

The Men’s B team showed they are capable of holding their own after promotion to Division Two after a 4-2 win against a strong Manor Park C.

First pair Ash Rutter with Phil Boardman won two close three-set encounters while second pair Steve Jones with Roy Halfpenny opened with a win, but then lost to the opposition’s first pair.

The match turned on the last contest of the night. After losing their opener Voitek Niedzwiedz with Aaron Oakes fought back from 1-5 down in the last set to eventually won 7-5 to secure the win for Bromsgrove.

The Men’s G team were too strong for Droitwich F, winning 5-1 in Division Nine East.

Barry Ross with Owen Perry, at first pair, won both their rubbers while third pair Dave Pugh with Fabrice Vinson, playing their first competitive matches, also excelled winning both. The only glitch was for Martin German with Cameron Owen who opened with a win but then went down against the Droitwich first pair.

It was tighter for the Ladies D team in Division Seven East. Taking on Manor Park D they won 8-6 on sets after rubbers were tied at 3-3.

Ros Cooke with Sue Forest won both their contests in two sets. Alison Douglas with Yvonne Priestman had a loss and a victory but Jane Corbett with Carol Cornellison went down in both their encounters.

The Ladies C team narrowly lost to Barnt Green in Division Four East. With rubbers and sets equal, they went down 52-53 on games.

Beccy Smith with Lisa Rushton won both their rubbers. Connie Wedelich with Dilys Thomas won the third rubber but Lorraine Russell with Anne Simper couldn’t get the vital extra win needed.

The Mixed D team of Charlie Tait with Lisa Rushton and Chris Hands with Lesley Hodson came away from a visit to Kidderminster A in Division Five East with 4-0 defeat.
