Bromsgrove Sporting start league campaign with convincing 4-0 win at Quorn

LIFE in Step Five got off to the perfect start for Bromsgrove Sporting as they won their Midland League Premier Division opener at Quorn 4-0.

Liam Spink had given last season’s ‘Invincible’ Division One champions a sixth-minute lead before Jordan Jones added the second four minutes before the interval on his competitive debut.

Subtitute Jason Cowley missed a penalty with 20 minutes to go but the striker made amends as a late double completed a comfortable victory at the Farley Way Stadium.

Victory for Paul Smith’s men sees them lie second in the table, only to be beaten to top spot by Westfields who trounced newly-promoted South Normanton Athletic 6-1.

It did not take long for Sporting to settle, although they could have been behind after just three minutes had it not been for a smart save from Reece Francis to deny Nathan Dale’s long-range effort.

But three minutes later Sporting stamped their mark in the game by taking the lead after six minutes.

Robbie Bunn’s corner found its way to Spink who provided an acrobatic finish to open the scoring.

Just moments later the hosts could have been level but an unmarked Jimmy Broooks headed over from a corner.

And in the same breathe the woodwork came to the rescue of the Fox Hunters as Bunn’s curling effort cannoned off the post following good build-up between the midfielder and striker Wade Malley.

Quorn keeper Ryan Thacker then denied Bunn and Malley from doubling the visitors’ lead before the former saw a long-range effort drift agonisngly wide of the far post seven minutes before the break.

But Sporting’s pressure eventual paid off in somewhat fortuitious circumstances as Jones saw his headed effort cannon off his marker and then off his own shoulder before nestling into the far corner.

After the interval another good save from Thacker prevented the industrious Bunn from getting himself on the scoresheet before Sam Wills cut inside and sent a shot over the bar just after the hour mark.

Sporting were then awarded a penalty for a handball in the area with 70 minutes on the clock but Cowley could not convert as his powerful effort was tipped round the post by Thacker.

Quorn continued to push and they looked to be a threat from set pieces as the corner count continued to go up.

However, from one such corner 11 minutes from time, Sporting showed their counter-attacking prowess as Cowley raced through on goal and lashed the ball high into the roof of the net from close range.

The hosts almost pulled one back after 85 minutes but Sam Moore could only guide his effort from Dominic Brennan’s cross wide of the mark.

And in the first minute of stoppage time, the Rouslers completed the rout when Cowley was on hand to tap into an empty net after Thacker parried Bunn’s low effort at the near post.
