Bromsgrove ladies beat rivals in thrilling contest

ANNE Simper and Sue Forrest held their nerve to secure Bromsgrove Ladies C Team a thrilling victory over local rivals Droitwich C Team.

With the match finely poised at 3-2 in Bromsgrove’s favour, the drama intensified when the floodlights had to be turned off due to long opening contests.

But Simper and Forrest managed to keep their cool to win their final set in a close battle to give Bromsgrove a 4-2 win.

Speaking after the match, Simper said: “Having to wait to complete the match, knowing it all rested on the final remaining set was nerve wracking. But we dug in and took it 6-4.”

Earlier Becky Smith with Steph Armstrong had won both their contests and Lisa Rushton with Connie Wedelich had won one and lost one.

After a strong start to the season, winning both their opening matches comfortably 5-1, the Ladies A team came up against a strong Stourbridge A team in a Division 1 encounter.

With some close three set battles the result could have gone either way, but eventually Stourbridge just edged it 4-2. Both Jenny Law with Rachael Mack and Sally Franks with Tina Manning had a win and a loss, while Sophie Oliver with Jilly Whitcombe went down in two hard-fought clashes.

It was plain sailing for the Men’s A Team as they thumped Manor Park B 6-0 in Division One despite having to call up Ollie Stratford from the B Team to partner Steve Halfpenny.

Matt Kirkham and James Griffiths had a close opening set against their opposite first pair but weren’t troubled after that. Jaspal Saimbi partnered Luke Pettit to straightforward wins while Halfpenny and Stratford had a long hard final set before coming out victorious.
