HEAD coach Dan Protherough believes Bromsgrove are heading in the right direction despite missing out on promotion from National Three Midlands.
The Finstall Park side were relegated from National Two last season and after a run of seven straight wins in December and January, they were in the mix to securing a return.
But back-to-back defeats to Hinckley and Lichfield followed by losses to Nuneaton and Peterborough ended their challenge as they now sit 13 points adrift of the promotion play-off place.
Protherough admitted there were matches where they let themselves down, but he insisted there were also plenty of positives to take from this season.
“Although we have lost a couple of close games we have put in some good performances since Christmas and showed some really good work ethic,” he said.
“Certainly in our last two home games against Old Halesonians and Sandbach we really dug deep whereas on the road we have not played that badly against Nuneaton and Peterborough, but we have had spells where we have not been quite at the races and it has cost us.
“But what has been more frustrating has been some of the losses that have been down to carelessness and our attitude not being 100 per cent. Sutton Coldfield away earlier in the season and both games against Lichfield come to mind because if you look at the table those teams are in the bottom half.
“But considering the amount of new players we have got I think it has been a reasonably successful season. We have been pretty pleased with our form in the second half of the season as we have scored a lot more tries, so we are moving in the right direction.”
Protherough said it was now important for his side to finish on a high as they take on Scunthorpe tomorrow (Saturday) before hosting leaders South Leicester on the final day of the season.
“We are playing the champions in the last game and the only team that’s beaten them this year before that in Scunthorpe, so they are both going to be very tough games,” he added.
“But if we win the last two we will probably finish third or fourth and if you finish there then you are in a position to kick on the following year.”
