BARNT GREEN secured a fine 67-run victory over visitors Kidderminster on the opening weekend of the new-style Graham Williamson Trophy.

As a result of the pandemic, the contest has replaced the usual Birmingham League competition.

The revamped 40-over competition places the league’s 24 member clubs in four regional groups of six. With promotion and relegation suspended for a year, each club is to play every other in the group on a home and away basis until September 19.

At the end of the ten-match programme, the four group winners will go forward to the pre-drawn semi-finals to be played on September 26 and the winners of the semi-finals will qualify for the grand final to be played at a neutral venue the following day.

There are six clubs in the league who are based in Worcestershire and they have all been placed in group four.

At Cherry Hill Road, Barnt Green closed on an emphatic 229-1 at the completion of 40 overs thanks to an opening partnership of 161 between Warwickshire’s Ed Pollock and newcomer Ben Chapman-Lilley.

Pollock scored 101 from 100 balls and Chapman-Lilley marked his debut with an unbeaten 81 from 119 balls.

Jacques Banton added an undefeated 35 from 21 balls, as he and Chapman-Lilley shared an unbroken second-wicket partnership of 68.

In reply, Kidderminster were restricted to 162-9 in 40 overs with Adam Hines taking 4-24 for the home side.

Banton also impressed with the ball with 3-35 as only Shameer Ahmed (48) showed any form with the bat for the visitors.

Runs were scarce at Bromsgrove, where the home side responded to a Barnards Green total of 154 all out with 103 all out.

In a game in which the bowlers held the upper hand, Oliver Rogoff – newly-signed from Brockhampton – hit 35 for Barnards Green and Josh Blunt hit 30.

A superb opening spell from George Marshall reduced Barnards Green to 13-3 before Rogoff led a recovery.

Marshall finished with 4-15 and skipper Mark Evenson took 3-34 for Bromsgrove who failed to impress with the bat as Ben Sutton took 3-19.
