Avoncroft hoping to topple in-form Kempsey

Bromsgrove Editorial 16th Jun, 2017   0

AVONCROFT skipper Mark Whitehead challenged his side to show they have a winning mentality by toppling unbeaten Kempsey in the Worcestershire League Division Three this weekend.

Whitehead felt his side produced too little, too late last week as they fell to a three-wickets defeat at home to Five Ways Old Edwardians.

But they will relish the chance to repeat a victory against Kempsey last summer when they meet again at Avoncroft.

“Kempsey are unbeaten and undoubtedly the strongest team in the league but we have a few players returning again this weekend to strengthen the line-up so we will be looking to repeat our victory over them from last season,” he said.

Avoncroft showed positive signs last weekend as opener Will Sach top scored with 84 as they reached 249-9 in their 50 overs. Mark Wood hit 38.

In reply, Old Eds looked comfortable at 100-1 and 218-3 but Avoncroft sensed an opening when four wickets fell for 19 runs including opener Dave Potter for 102. However, they could not stop Old Eds getting past their target with three overs to spare.

“We felt we should have been able to defend 250 with the bowling attack we had but in fairness to their opener Potter he made an almost chanceless 100.

“We made a fight of it but unfortunately a little too late in the day. At 218-3 they were cruising but at 238-7 we felt we might just be back in it. Sadly it was not to be.

“At times it felt like we thought we just deserved the victory rather

than seeing that we had to earn it. That was the most disappointing thing for me on the day.”

Meanwhile, Seconds captain Josh Cound smashed an unbeaten 147 as they secured a victory at Five Ways OE.

Jack Bennett marked his debut with 37 in a 119-run partnership with Cound who went onto record his maiden ton as Avoncroft closed on 235-5.

Set a revised total of 216 due to over lost due to rain, Old Eds finished on 78-5.

Avoncroft’s Sunday team returned to winning ways with a disciplined five-wickets win against Stourbridge to go to the top of the table. Having dismissed Stourbridge for 167, Avoncroft had Cound (51) and Christopher Pitt (46no) to thank for getting to their target with a 97-run partnership after Croft had been 63-4 at one point.
