WEST Mercia has been named the third highest area in the UK for speeding tickets.

The statistics, released by UK Carline, show there were 62,503 fines in the force area throughout 2017 which puts it just behind Surrey (62,623) and West Yorkshire (142,610). Ironically West Mercia actually registered 19,741 fewer offences last year than it did in 2016 – a drop of 32 per cent.

Other areas in the top ten included Dundee, North Wales, Kent, Lancashire, Humberside, Norfolk and Dorset.

A spokesperson for the West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership said: “Detecting those that choose to risk travelling in excess of the legal limit is a top priority for West Mercia Police.

“Our policing area is one of the largest in the country so it’s no surprise that we feature high up in the list in terms of the number of notices issued.

“Speed enforcement will continue to form an important part of our roads policing throughout 2018.”

Jonathan Nolan, general manager at UK Carline said: “Our research has certainly produced some eye opening insight into the UK’s driving habits, with some worryingly fast speeds being clocked by speed cameras up and down the country over the last few years.

“We hope the stats will make people think twice next time they consider speeding, particularly in more residential areas. Drivers should always stay safe on the roads by never exceeding the speed limits.”
