Village sunflower fields open for visitors

Bromsgrove Editorial 15th Aug, 2022   0

A FAMILY-RUN farm shop and restaurant in Wythall is fund-raising for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal by opening its sunflower fields.

Each summer Becketts Farm plants sunflowers and wildflowers in one of its fields.

The fields are free to enter but the family asks for a donation to be made to their chosen charity. Last year they raised £980 for NHS Charities Together.

This year they have chosen the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, as the sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine. Becketts managing director Simon Beckett said: “We started growing sunflowers as a bit of a trial during the pandemic.

“We wanted to see if we could create the lettering NHS cut out in the flowers, which could be viewed from the air. People enjoyed visiting the field and we realised what a buzz the sunflowers created in the local community.

“So, we’ve continued the tradition. Providing a little something free for families to do during the summer holidays is a great thing and each year our charity appeal raises a great deal too.”

The field is located on the Becketts Farm site itself and the event is free to enter between 7.30am and 5pm daily.

There is a maze-like path cut into the flowers to follow.
