STEP out on a canalside walk and take a tour of the Tardebigge Lime Kilns as part of the Heritage Open Weekend this Saturday and Sunday, September 8-9.
The kilns, part of the complex of Tardebigge New Wharf, are part of a project run by the Worcester-Birmingham & Droitwich Canals Society and are situated next to the basin near the ‘Top Lock’ of the Tardebigge flight of locks.
Lime produced from the kilns had a wide range of uses in manufacturing and agriculture and helped to power the huge growth of the West Midlands during the Industrial Revolution.
The kilns consist of five chambers built into the natural slope of the ground so they could be loaded with coal and limestone at canal level, with the burnt lime extracted at a lower level.
Visitors will also be able to see orchard project the canal society has been working on.
The visits are completely free and people are welcome to pop in anytime between 10am and 4pm on both days.
