A CYCLE shop which has been in Bromsgrove for more than a century is closing its doors at the end of the month.
Speeds Cycles has been operating out of the same building in Birmingham Road since 1911.
One worker at the store said it was due to a change of circumstances and there were several factors and it was no longer cost effective to run a bike shop.
“It was just one of those things – no one’s to blame, it’s a collapsing industry.
“People’s lifestyles are changing, more people are turning to the Internet, it’s an extension of the devolution of the high street that we have seen over the last few years.”
In a way the situation has been a timely one as the proprietors also felt it would be a good time to retire.
A statement on the shop’s Facebook page from Dave, Sue and the Staff, read: “As many of you know Speeds Cycles has been operating out of this building since 1911, many of you will have had your first bike from here.
“It is therefore with a very heavy heart that we have to announce that Speeds Cycles will cease trading from the shop on September 30.
“We are in the process of selling off the stock and anything that is not nailed down.
“Now would be a good time to see if you can bag a bargain or souvenir.
“We are very sad that it has become necessary to close the shop and would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their support over the years.”
