School attendance in Worcestershire on the rise after dip in recent weeks

ATTENDANCE levels in schools across Worcestershire are on the rise again after a fall in recent weeks.

The number is now above the national average.

In the last two weeks, county schools have reported a 57 per cent decrease in pupils and staff affected by Covid-19.

Sarah Wilkins, director of Education and Early Help, said: “Our headteachers, college leaders and those in early learning have worked tirelessly to ensure the education sector has a strong grip of Covid-19 measures.

“The pandemic has shown that the school community can come together and achieve even in the most difficult of times.”

All pupils across Worcestershire were welcomed back into school in September, and since then almost all schools have remained open throughout this time.

Councillor Marcus Hart, responsible for education and skills at Worcestershire County Council, said: “The positive upturn in figures we have seen in recent weeks has been great to see.

“I have seen first-hand on my recent school visits the excellent work schools are doing to keep them safe and open to educate our children and young people.”
