Relaunch of Rubery's Morrisons raises £9,200 for the Poppy Appeal

THE MORRISONS supermarket in Rubery raised £9,300 for the Poppy Appeal through a variety of fund-raising events in the fortnight leading up to Remembrance weekend.

Last weekend coincided with the store’s relaunch and among the activities were performances by ukulele player Joe James Thomas who played songs made famous by George Formby.

The staff also dressed in 1940s attire and Helen Pearson sang songs from the era.

There was also face-painting by the Fairytale Party Planners and there was a ‘ration book treasure hunt’ which taught children about what life in the UK was like during the war by challenging them to find the rationed items.

Morrisons Rubery’s community champion Jane Williams said the Remembrance events held were well-received and the moment the whole supermarket fell silent at 11am on Saturday, November 11 was poignant.

“We have had such great feedback about the events we organised and some lovely comments from people on the Rubery’s Community Group Facebook page.

“It was phenomenal and we are now planning to do a similar thing every year.”

As well as the Remembrance activities, a cheque for just over £17,000 from the Morrisons Foundation was handed to representatives from Queen Alexandra College in South Birmingham which will benefit the music department there.

Jane urged charities, groups and organisations to apply to the fund for projects that benefit the community and improve people’s lives.
