AN OLD hardware shop which was a favourite with residents when it was based in Bromsgrove High Street has been recreated at the Norton Collection Museum.

The venue on Birmingham Road contains a number of reconstructed old shop fronts from the town so people can see how they used to look.

Appleby’s is the latest one which was an ironmonger’s and hardware store until its closure in 1960.

The display, which has now been completed, features a variety of old hardware items displayed in the window, including an old wooden display stand donated by Harris Brush. It shows a variety of the company’s products.

Historian Jenny Townshend told The Standard: “Thomas Appleby took over the business in the 1890s from the Morris family.

“It was an ironmongers and hardware shop which had a workshop out the back where they carried out repairs.

“The Appleby family lived above the business which sold agricultural equipment to farmers in the area.

“It was an iconic black and white timber-framed building on the corner of St John’s Street and the High Street and because of that, it features a lot inphotographs and postcards of old Bromsgrove.”

The Norton Collection Museum reopened last May after a lot of hard work to bring it up to scratch.

It is now open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
