Oakland Foundation looks to support new child and youth initiatives thanks to local donations

CHILDREN’S charity, the Oakland Foundation, is looking to support new child and youth initiatives thanks to the generosity of local people and donations from the business community.

The Foundation supports children, young people and their families in and around Redditch and Bromsgrove, through initiatives based on health and nutrition, education and sport.

In the last year the Foundation supported more than 1,100 girls through the ‘This Girl Can’ programme in partnership with Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, delivered over 1,000 holiday meals via Active Kitchen since 2017, ensured over 400 breakfasts each year are available to pupils undertaking SATS, 150 children have benefitted from taking part in sports activities over the summer holidays and the Foundation continues to work with a number of local schools.

Oakland Foundation Trustee, Luke Attwell, said: “Our deepest thanks and appreciation to our generous supporters and donors, every penny donated helps numerous children and young people across the community through projects with local schools, community groups and educational initiatives.”

The Foundation was launched six years ago by Redditch-based family supply chain company Oakland International with the aim of reducing the effects of child poverty and social disadvantage in and around Redditch and Bromsgrove.

The latest figures from End Child Poverty (May 2019) state that today 30 per cent of children in the UK are living in poverty and 67 per cent of children in poverty have at least one parent in work.

Currently more than 31 per cent of children in Redditch and 22 per cent of children in Bromsgrove are living in poverty.

The Foundation has worked with and supported various educational and youth projects including the Redditch Food Bank, YMCA, Mentor Link, Bromsgrove and Redditch schools, youth projects, sports clubs and Redditch Active Kitchen, which provides youth activity programmes and food during school holidays.
