BIRMINGHAM New Street has been evacuated and remains closed after British Transport Police found a suspicious item on a platform.

West Midlands Railway confirmed trains will return to the nearest alternative station where possible.

All valid rail tickets are being accepted on local National Express West Midlands bus routes.

The Midland Metro tram system will also only be operating until 6pm due to industrial action.

Among the lines affected were the Cross City, between Lichfield, Birmingham New Street and Bromsgrove and Redditch, via Alvechurch, Barnt Green, Longbridge, Northfield and Kings Norton.
