DRIVERS are being warned to be aware of speeding fines which come into force today and see fines linked to people’s weekly wages.
Until today, the maximum fines for speeding were £1,000 or £2,500 on the motorway.
Under the new legistation, the new fines are divided into three categories – a breach of up to 10mph which incur the driver a fine of 50 per cent of their weekly income, breaches of between 11mph and 20mph which see motorists fined their weekly income and speed limit breaks of more than 20mph where motorists pay 150 per cent of their weekly income.
In addition to the steeper fines, drivers still face points against their licence or disqualification, depending on the severity of the offence.
These changes came from a Sentencing Council consultation held last year, who hope to ensure a ‘clear increase in penalty as the seriousness of offending increases.’
A poll of more than 300 drivers by telematics insurer Marmalade found almost 60 per cent of drivers aged 25 and over and 44 per cent of motorists under 25 knew about the changes.
