A LIFESAVING duo were rewarded for their quick-thinking actions which saved a man who collapsed in Barnt Green, writes Tom Banner.

Craig Nicholls and Mandy Banham went to the aid of Robert Whissel who collapsed while walking home from the newsagents in Barnt Green last year.

Robert had no previous history of cardiac problems, but the situation was found to have been caused by a complete heart blockage.

Luckily, Craig and Mandy were nearby and their swift action in delivering first aid and CPR helped rescue Robert and he has since gone on to make a full recovery.

They received public commendations at the West Midlands Ambulance Service excellence in the community awards.

The event recognised the efforts of community first responders, St John Ambulance, other emergency services and members of the public who had gone beyond the call of duty to help save lives and support the work of West Midlands Ambulance Service.

High Sheriff of the West Midlands John Hudson OBE said: “You are doing the things that really count in society and we’ve heard many heartwarming stories about what you have all achieved for people in their hour of need.”
