Land at Bromsgrove Golf Centre could be used for housing

BROMSGROVE Golf Centre has announced some of its land could be used for housing in order to secure to confirm its long-term future.

The family run centre has a vision to create a long and lasting legacy which will be enjoyed for many years to come.

So it has contacted Bromsgrove District Council to see if the authority will consider space within its land to address future housing needs in the district.

It is hoped, if the plan is successful, the move would fund a state-of-the-art revamp of the centre so it could serve the local community for many generations to come.

The Bromsgrove Golf Centre’s submission will now be reviewed using a technical study called the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA), a process that looks to identify local sites that could be developed over the next ten years to meet growing housing needs.

Whilst the SHLAA is an important evidence source to help inform the council’s future plan making, it will not in itself determine whether a site should be allocated for future development or whether planning permission would be granted.

Bromsgrove Golf Centre Owner, Phil Morris said: “For my brother Adam and I to even consider this option has been an extremely difficult decision that has not been taken lightly, and only after consulting with leading industry experts and other stakeholders.

“Whilst we explore these future options there will be no change to the investment on the site or to the commitment to our members and customers as we are still very much dedicated to drive the Golf Centre forward.”

But he said there were no guarantees the submission would even be considered and stressed that it would be ‘business as usual’ in the coming years as they made every effort to maintain the facilities it offered.

Golf and its demand is changing and a time when many clubs are experiencing ever increasing financial challenges due to rising overheads, Bromsgrove Golf Centre hopes its vision will provide a sustainable forward-looking and progressive approach to the sport and facilities it offers.

Ruth Bamford, Bromsgrove District Council’s head of planning and regeneration, said: “We have received this SHLAA submission and are now considering it in the annual review of that document, which we will publish in due course.

“This is of course a question of strategic planning, the site is currently in the Green Belt and could only come forward for development subject to a district-wide review of that.”
