Firefighters extinguish chimney blaze in Romsley last night

Bromsgrove Editorial 17th Nov, 2017   0

A FIRE broke out in a chimney in Romsley last night.

One crew from Bromsgrove attended and firefghers used a roof ladder, height equipment and one hose to extinguish the blaze just before 7pm.

Thermal imaging cameras were used afterwards to ensure the fire would not restart.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue service have issued health and safety advice for residents who have real fires and log burners.

People are urged to always use a fire guard to protect their home from flying sparks and hot embers, ensure the fire is fully out before they go to bed and keep chimneys and flues clean and well-maintained.

Chimneys should be cleaned by a reputable chimney sweep and rubbish should never be burnt in them.

Flammable liquids such as petrol and paraffin should never be used to start fires.

Statistics from HWFRS revealed chimney fires accounted to more than 4,200 incidents dealt with by the service between April 2015 and March last year.

Group Commander Mick Cadman from HWFRS’s Community Risk department said: “We also urge everyone that has a working fire and chimney to make an appointment with a registered chimney sweep if their chimney is due a clean and also encourage others to do so.”
