THE FIRST ever 5k fun run to have been organised by the Barnt Green Chuggers takes place next Sunday (May 7).
The event, which organisers say is more of a fun event rather than a timed race, takes participants in a loop around the village.
Although it is 5k (three laps of the village), people can do as much or as little as they want.
The run starts at 12.30pm at Millennium Park and then there will be a ‘Party in the Park’ afterwards where people can enjoy a bar, refreshments and live music until 6pm.
Those wanting to take part can register at the Barnt Green Post Office during normal opening hours and Barnt Green Sports Club, after 7pm where people can pay their run entry fee and collect their run number.
The Chuggers are keen to introduce local people to running and as have recently started a ‘Women’s Up and Running’ programme, which has already attracted 20 keen individuals who are aiming to complete the 5k fun run.
The Barnt Green Chuggers began 12 years ago in the front room of a house in the village – back then there were only a handful of runners.
They were later joined by the Chaingang Cycling club and together the club, now based at Barnt Green Sports Club, has 100 runners and riders.
Weekly runs take place on Mondays at 8pm and the rides on Wednesdays at 7pm.
The Chuggers and Chaingang continue to grow and club chairman Mike Dickenson puts the success down to the fun and recreational nature of the running and cycling on offer, complemented by a full social programme.
“There is no pressure to compete and individuals simply enjoy weekly club runs and rides, along with those – who with support to improve – go on to achieve amazing things and take on numerous individual challenges that have helped raise thousands of pounds for charities over the years.”
Being based at Barnt Green Sports Club is an added bonus as Chugger and Chainganger members gain membership of the sports club and can use the bar after club sessions.
They are also able to extend their membership so they and their children can enjoy the fabulous tennis, squash, badminton and table tennis facilities.
