THE FORMER leader of Worcestershire County Council George Lord has died at the age of 85, county council chiefs have confirmed.

In a brief statement, County Hall confirmed the former leader had died and expressed its sympathies to his family and friends.

Lord resigned as leader and county councillor for Alvechurch in 2010 after allegations of his inappropriate behaviour towards several female members of staff were made.

He was then charged with eight indecent assaults believed to date back over a number of decades. Lord pleaded guilty in 2012 to three charges of indecent assault on an underage girl in the 1970s and was also found guilty of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old in the council chamber at Worcestershire County Council in 2010.

The disgraced former politician was jailed for four years for assaulting her and for indecently assaulting his underage victim in the 1970s.

As well as serving as a county councillor, Lord also represented Marlbrook on Bromsgrove District Council and was a member of the Bromsgrove Conservative Association.

A County Council review later revealed mistakes were made in the immediate aftermath of the assault on the 19-year-old.
