BROMSGROVE residents will be pleased to hear the bread, ale and leather in the town are all of a highest quality and the water courses are all free of debris and flowing well.

Those were the findings of the town’s Court Leet which carried out its annual assizes in the High Street yesterday (Saturday).

The anicient tradition was officially opened by Bellman, Town Crier Kevin Ward, near the iconic Housman Statue where more than 100 people had gathered to watch.

After that The Court’s vicar Rev Ray Khan, from St John’s Church, gave thanks and said a special prayer and the official Charter granted to the town by King John back in 1199 was read out.

The members in their various roles then announced one-by-one the official results – Bread Taster Ray Giles, Flesh (meat) Taster Bill Tucker, after sampling produce from butchers Leigh Jones, Jo Slade, following tastings at The Red Lion and St John’s Wine Rooms, and Leather Tester John Dillon.

‘Brook-Looker’ Robert Bird also declared that the water courses were all fine.

The Court met earlier in the day at the historic Housman Hall where Bailiff Phil Harper had paid tribute to late member Steve Sanders who has recently passed away. Mr Harper thanked him for his support over the years and a minute’s silence was held in his memory.

Bromsgrove District Council chairman, Coun Helen Jones, said: “It’s an amazing tradition and great that it is marked in the town every year. Long may it continue.”

Rev Khan said: “Some traditions are dry and dusty but this one is a living and vibrant one which brings energy and good will to the town.”

As well as the assizes, the annual Elizabethan Fair Day was held with several stalls on the High Street ran by charities and community organisations.

Those on the stalls dressed in Elizabethan costume and the fancy dress competition, The Sumners Cup, was won by the holders from St John’s Church.

Jenny Twist and Chaz Kreuzer from Crocs and Curios were among those with stalls at the Elizabethan Market.

Jenny said: “It’s a lovely day and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

“It’s great to be part of the event.”
