WALKING HOCKEY is set to go global after interest from Australia and New Zealand was received following a successful pilot scheme in Bromsgrove.

Alan Gormley, head development coach at Bromsgrove Hockey club, said that after talking to friends in Australia about the recent launch of walking hockey in the town they had asked him to visit them and provide a first-hand account.

Since then ten hockey associations in Queensland, Australia, have also become interested in learning more and the board of hockey in New Zealand also want to discuss walking, junior and adult hockey with Mr Gormley.

Mr Gormley said “Walking hockey has become very popular since it was launched recently in Bromsgrove, the interest has been incredible and the sessions have been hugely successful.

“People even phone and apologise if they’re not able to attend.”

Plans are underway for the trip to take place in May and June if £5,000 can be raised through a crowdfunding appeal to cover costs, with a number of business already providing support including Adidas who are sponsoring kit and clothing.

Alan said he has received a letter from the chief executive of Melbourne Hockey Association in Australia who wants to meet with him and he has also arranged to visit Dubai en route to Australia to talk about walking hockey.

Those wanting to try walking hockey can attend sessions at St Godwalds Park, St Godwalds Road, Bromsgrove, on Mondays from 7pm to 8pm.

Sessions cost £3 per person and are graded either ‘fun’ or ‘competitive’.

Thank yous will be issued for any donations and, depending on the amount pledged, free training sessions may be offered.
