Cofton Hackett mum Katy responding well as 'circulating breast tumour cells' halve following Germany treatment

A BRAVE mum who was diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer while she was pregnant says she is responding well to her treatment.

Friends and family of Katy Dawson, 37, from Cofton Hackett, have been trying to raise £150,000 for potentially life-saving treatment of the triple negative breast cancer.

Katy told The Standard this week her latest results showed her ‘circulating tumour cells had halved’.

The mum-of-two underwent an immediate mastectomy at 35 weeks pregnant and has been travelling back and forth to Germany for treatment since August.

With each trip costing €25,000 (£21,300), Katy needs to return every two to three months for boosters, in the hope the cells will continue to reduce. Her next treatment is is January.

She said: “We are all really happy with the reduction and it is a massive step in the right direction.

“There were a lot of circulating tumour cells in my body which showed up as 100 per millilitre of blood.

“This worked out at half a million cells which could potentially form in the liver and lungs.”

Katy’s treatment works to stop this from happening and her last test showed the cells had halved.

“The German doctor said we should be able to keep reducing the cells, if not stabilising them,” she added.

The fund-raising page, which was set up in June this year, has now reached more than £55,000 and with the number steadily rising, a group of mums at Licky Hills Primary School have organised a coffee morning for next Friday (December 16).

At the event, from 9am to 12pm at the Trinity Centre in Lickey, there will be cakes and Christmas crafts for sale, along with a raffle and soft play provided by ‘Happy Feet’.
