Catshill children re-connect with nature at Battlefield Brook

Bromsgrove Editorial 21st Oct, 2016   0

CHILDREN from a Bromsgrove school reconnected with nature when they planted out a section of the Battlefield Brook.
Fifteen pupils from Catshill Middle School sought to bring improvements to the local ecosystem by removing concrete sandbags and scrubs to help transform the banks of the brook.
The young activists were inspired to get their hands dirty by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust’s ‘Love Your River Bromsgrove’ project.
Improvements were made to both the main Battlefield Brook as well as to the Marl Brook – which mostly runs in pipes underground, but is briefly out of the pipe in the corner of the meadow.
A major aim of the work was to help reduce localised flooding through altering bank heights and removing some of the scrub which previously held water back.
The children also planted flag iris, marsh marigold, juncus grass and other native wet-loving plants.
