THIS YEAR’S Bromsgrove Festival is just about to enter its third week with a classical and folk music concerts, the summer school and the town’s carnival.
Sunday, July 7
At 2.30pm, the AD Concert Band will take centre stage at the Jubilee Bandstand in Sanders Park. The free event is the latest in Bromsgrove District Council’s Bands in the Park series.
Also on the same day, will be the Summer Concert for Gershwin at Bromsgrove School’s Routh Hall. The programme will celebrate 100 years of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and see a fond farewell to 60 years of Bromsgrove Concerts. The event will feature Enigma Brass, pianist Alastair Moseley and be conducted by Richard Jenkinson – visit the story about Bromsgrove Concerts’ last ever event for more.
Bromsgrove Summer School
The three-day summer school runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 to 10. The events, organised by the Bromsgrove Society, will celebrate the town’s industrial, architectural and cultural history. On day one (Tuesday), there will be a talk on ‘The Canal World’ by Tony Condor, the former curator of the National Waterways Museum. On day two (Wednesday), historian Pat Tansell will shed light on ‘Benjamin Sanders and Button Making in Bromsgrove’. And on day three (Thursday), Jenny Townshend and Julian Hunt will talk about ‘The Inns and Public Houses of Bromsgrove’. Places are £50-per-day for members and £55-per-day for non-members. The latest Festive Classics will take place at the New Guesten Hall at Avoncroft Museum. Trad Jazz at Lunchtime will be at midday, with Sauce City Jazz entertaining viewers with a range of traditional and New Orleans Dixieland jazz classics. Among them will be ‘Trad Jazz’ favourites, including Panama Rag, Muskrat Ramble, Just a Little While, Bourbon Street Parade and more. Thursday, July 11
Over The Moon will be the latest to grace the Bromsgrove Folk Club stage. Canadian roots/swing duo are comprised of Suzanne Levesque and Craig Bignell. The pair live on a ranch in the foothills of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains and their music is a wild ride from 1940s-sounding Western swing and Appalachian old-time to cowboy blues. Tickets, available on the door for the event at Catshill Social Club at 8pm, are £8 for Bromsgrove Folk Club members or £10 for non-members. Under 25s’ admission is £5. Bromsgrove Carnival
The free weekend full of fun, food, laughter and more runs from next Friday to Saturday, July 12 and 13. The carnival arena, with stalls and a funfair, in Sanders Park opens at 11am on the Saturday and runs until 4pm. The parade starts at North Bromsgrove High School at midday and will journey to the park, arriving around 12.45pm. The award ceremony for the best parade entries will take place at 1pm and then there will be dance performances at the bandstand between 1.30pm and 4.30pm. There will also be a Street Food Village with main stage and party in the park between 11am and 9.30pm.
Saturday, July 13
The latest Bromsgrove Arts concert will see Amber Liadan Live take to the stage at 8pm at Fairfield Village Hall, Stourbridge Road. Amber Liadan is a singer-songwriter and performer who creates melodies that resonate with the heart and soul. Tickets – from ticketlab.co.uk – are £8 in advance or £10 on the door.
