Bromsgrove scouts doing best to reach 'World Scout Jamboree' in West Virginia

A GROUP of 11 young people from Bromsgrove are hoping to be heading to the prestigious ‘World Scout Jamboree’ in 2019 in West Virginia.

But they need Standard readers’ help to raise the £4,000 needed to get them there.

Each young person will be working on both their individual and group fund-raising projects, as well as applying for local grants and sponsorship.

So far they have organised cake sales in Bromsgrove High Street, a car boot sale and provided ‘snack boxes’ in the staff room at their schools to kickstart the fund-raising.

A total of 36 scouts from across Worcestershire will be heading to the Jamboree, which is held every four years. The three week chance-in-a-lifetime event, organised by the World Scout Organisations in Mexico, Canada and America, will feature activities, fun, and friendship with scout groups from every corner of the globe.

The scouts will be accompanied by four adult volunteers including deputy unit leader Mark who is also a Bromsgrove Scout leader.

He said: “It’s a real privilege to be part of the leadership team going to the Jamboree and working with such a great group of Scouts and Explorer Scouts from across the county.

“Coming from Bromsgrove myself I’m particularly pleased to see such a good representation from this area.”

Robert Sidley, the county commissioner of Hereford and Worcester Scouts and the Jamboree unit leader, said: “They are all dedicated and talented individuals who will be working very hard over the next two years.

“This is not only to fund-raise for their adventure but their contribution through fund-raising means they are supporting young people attending from other less affluent countries as well.”

Bromsgrove Explorer Scout Lauren said: “I think it will be an amazing experience and I am looking forward to seeing different cultures and making many new friends.”

To further raise funds the Scouts are hosting a race night on January 29 at Stoke Prior Sports and Country Club. Details of that event and future fund-raisers will be published on the Bromsgrove Scouts Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

Anyone interested in helping the unit get to North America by donating to the cause or by sponsoring them should email Sid at [email protected] for more information.
