Bromsgrove nursing home in 'special measures' after inspection finds it 'unclean and unhygienic'

A NURSING home in Bromsgrove has been put into special measures after a surprise inspection found it to be ‘unclean and unhygienic’.

St George’s Nursing Home, which can accommodate up to 43 residents and had 19 people at the time, was rated ‘inadequate’ following the inspection carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in April.

The report, published in November, found the Old Station Road home to be in breach of four regulations of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, including safe care and treatment of the residents, governance of service, person centred care and staffing.

Inspectors claimed there was an offensive odour, toilets were soiled with brown matter and a staff member failed to discard used needles safely.

The CQC also found people were not always kept safe from harm and were put at increased risk of infections as staff practices did not ensure people lived in a clean and hygienic home.

The report showed some residents complained they had not been out for a long time, with one person claiming they had not been beyond the home’s garden since they moved there last year.

Despite this, residents were found to be supported with their medicines which were ordered, stored, administered and disposed of safely and staff had positive, caring conversations with people.

Raj Gokhool, operations manager for Aster Healthcare Ltd, the company which runs the care home, claimed effective systems had since been put in place to ensure changes were made with the day-to-day operation of the home.

He said: “The inspection took place in April 2016 and since then we can confirm that an action plan relating to the shortfalls identified in the report have been forwarded to the Care Quality Commission and these shortfalls have now been addressed.

“We are confident that the care and welfare of the residents at St George’s Nursing Home are not being compromised and the services being provided are safe, caring and effective.

“Above all our residents are treated with dignity and have a voice within the home.”
