BROMSGROVE fell silent over the weekend to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of VJ Day.

Crowds gathered on Saturday (August 12), to mark the anniversary of Victory over Japan at the end of the Second World War.

A two minute silence was held at 11am, as well as a parade and service where wreaths were laid at the Burma Campaign Memorial, Crown Close.

The memorial remembers the soldiers, sailors and airmen who served and were lost in the Burma Campaign between 1943 and 1945 and is the largest one of its kind in the UK.

The British Legion, Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) and the Burma Star Association were all in attendance, as well a representatives from the Court Leet, Bromsgrove District Council and various organisations.

Reverend Ray Khan, Vicar at st John’s Church, said: “We gathered to pay our respects and to commemorate all those who served in the far east and southeast Asia with a focus on the Second World War.

“A service was held to remember and pray for the people of that area of the world now and committed ourselves to peace and justice.”
