As rain clouds gather, Severn Trent issues guide in case of renewed flooding

TEAMS from Severn Trent are on standby following major flooding issues on Sunday, particularly in Wythall.

Thundery storms are set to return to the region over the next few days and there could be issues with flooding and overflowing sewers.

The company says that anyone who has flooding at their home should check to see if it’s rainwater or sewage that’s coming, possibly from an overflowing sewer, through a manhole cover in the garden or outside the home.

If it’s just rainwater, the flooding should subside when it stops raining, although it can take up to four hours for water to drain away.

However if it’s sewage that is coming up this will be treated as a priority by Severn Trent and people affected this way should immediately call them on 0800 783 4444 and they’ll get a team out to help as quickly as possible.

If the flooding is from drains and gullies in the road, call the local council as they are responsible for road drainage, but again, this type of flooding generally subsides when the rain stops.

If the flooding is coming from a river or stream, get in touch with the Environment Agency, as they have responsibility here.

Severn Trent says call volumes can be high in stormy weather and customers may have to wait longer than usual for a response, so following the advice above or visiting www.stwater.co.uk could save time.

The firm also says if the flooding is due to rainwater, there is no need to call unless it’s still there some time after the rain has stopped.
