AT THEIR June meeting members of Fairfield WI had Adrian James as their guest speaker who spoke about Bodenham Arboretum through the ages.

Adrian was a freelance photographer of plants and gardens for magazines and catalogues and has a long-standing love of the arboretum after photographing it over many years.

He showed a range of scenes which depicted everything from winter snow scenes and lovely frosty and misty early mornings, through to vibrant autumn snaps.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The colours were fantastic as were the photographs showing reflections of plants and trees in the water.

“It was beautiful photography which was wonderfully captured.”

Kath gave a vote of thanks to Adrian who, members said, had shown the arboretum in a different light.

The competition for best single rose of won by Meriel, with Shirley coming second and third.

Love and best wishes were sent to Carol who is not well at the moment and members heard about those who attended Pedmore WI’s Cheese and Wine evening.

They said it was a very enjoyable evening, mainly due to two of Pedmore WI’s members who formed a really good and really funny double act.

Members also learned all was going to plan for the village’s Produce Show on August 12 and that the new Group Co-ordinator was Chris Henderson from Frankley WI.

Information was given on a lunch with Gyles Brandreth organised by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) and being held at the Chateau Impney Hotel on September 11.

And members found out about the NFWI Annual Meeting which was held in Liverpool.

After being officially opened by the Mayor of Liverpool, there were two excellent speakers there. One was author and founder of the Green and Black’s Organic Chocolate Jo Fairley and the other was Susie Dent, the author and resident dictionary expert on Channel 4’s Countdown.

There was also a tribute band playing songs from the 1960s and, as they were in Liverpool, the set ended with a Beatles’ classic.

The next meeting is on July 12 and the speaker is Christine Westwood on One Stroke Painting. The competition will challenge members to ‘colour a flower’.
