ALVECHURCH FC hosted a girls football tournament with more than 80 children taking part in the competition held at The Hayes.

Girls aged seven and eight years-old from Alvechurch Wildcats, Merritts Brook Primary, Kings Norton Primary, Woodrow, Crown Meadow, St John Fisher, St Mary’s and St Brigits all took part in the event.

And Kings Norton Primary were the winners on the night with each team providing great feedback having enjoyed the occasion.

There was also nothing but encouragement from the sidelines as teachers took away information as to how the girls should join the taster sessions over the coming weeks.

Alvechurch Sporting Director, Mark Fogarty said: “It is our intention to have a full compliment of age groups in the girls section for the season 2023/24.

“The evening was a huge success with over 80 girls taking part, some of whom had never played competitive football before.

“There was a real genuine joy on the faces of the girls and indeed their School teachers and parents and a feel good factor was had by all.”

Church hosted the tournament with immense pride, following on from the success of the Lionesses who won the European Championships in the summer.

The club invited all schools in close proximity and currently operate a Wildcats programme with 20 girls signed up and train on a weekly basis.

Church want to open up the programme to more girls and have invited all participants to join the club for two taster sessions on Thursday, October 6 and Thursday, October 13 with a view to joining Wildcats training and developing more teams at Alvechurch in the future.

Anyone who would like to join the Wildcats programme should contact the club’s Head of Girls and Women’s Football, Missy McKenna at: [email protected] or on: 07562 727608
