COUNTER Terrorism officers have confirmed Liverpool Women’s Hospital was the target of yesterday’s Remembrance Sunday attack.
Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, Russ Jackson, confirmed the shocking scenes were a terrorist incident at a press conference this lunchtime.
A taxi exploded and was engulfed in flames just before 11am yesterday (Sunday) at a drop-off zone near the entrance, killing the passenger and injuring the driver.
The cabbie, named locally as David Perry, was declared a hero by Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson for locking the suspect inside the vehicle.
Four men have been arrested in the city under the Terrorism Act.
Mr Jackson said the taxi passenger appeared to have made an ‘improvised explosive device’ which caused the blast.
His motivation is yet to be understood.
All four men in custody will be interviewed later by counter-terrorism detectives.
Every day, on average, 24 babies are born in Liverpool Women’s Maternity Unit and another three babies are born prematurely and cared for in the Neonatal Unit.
The hospital is the largest single site maternity hospital in the UK.
