THE NEW monarch King Charles III will be the first in history to have a gold sovereign created in honour of his coronation.
Whilst His Majesty the King will be the ninth monarch to have gold sovereigns minted with his likeness, the King Charles III Coronation Gold Sovereign Range, released by specialists Hattons of London, will be the first in history to carry the Coronation Emblem.
The reverse of each coin will bear the Coronation Emblem, featuring the traditional floral motifs of each of the home nations, to pay tribute to the King’s love of the natural world and to the four countries of the United Kingdom.
The emblem consists of the St Edward’s crown in the centre, surrounded by English roses, Scottish thistles, Welsh daffodils and Irish shamrocks encircled by the words ‘King Charles III Coronation 6th May 2023’.
The opposite side of the coins feature a portrait of the King, created by artist Jody Clark who also designed the final portrait of
The Late Queen Elizabeth II. In a tradition dating back to the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, the Kings likeness will face the opposite way to his mother’s.
Britain was emerging from post war austerity during the late Queen’s coronation meaning no gold coinage had been minted since the 1930s, preventing the creation of sovereigns to commemorate her ascension to the throne.
A total of 4,999 King Charles III Coronation sovereign’s have been minted in 22 carat gold and follows Hattons of London’s 2023 King Charles III Greatest Monarchs and King Charles III Accession Sovereign ranges, which have become the fastest selling collections in the company’s history.
