Rednal father and son selected as Commonwealth games batonbearers

A FATHER and son from Rednal have been selected to become Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Baton Bearers.

Stephen and Curtis Pugh will complete their leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay on July 27, although the location or time has not been confirmed.

Stephen set up Tracey’s Dream and Friends after his wife lost her cancer battle six years ago.

She had always wanted to buy a caravan so people battling the illness could enjoy a free break with their family.

The charity offered a free holiday to around 40 families a year but, due to the pandemic, they were forced to sell the caravan as they could not guarantee people’s safety.

Stephen said: “We were at a loss of what to do; we were undecided on whether we would be able to carry on.”

Stephen and Curtis decided to compile essential bags for hospice patients containing supplies including shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and hand soap.

They have donated to hospices including Primrose, St Mary’s and Acorns and have also delivered small bags containing love hearts on Valentines Day and more than 500 chocolate eggs at Easter.

They are able to provide the service due to support from Tribute Night Promotions, which allows Stephen and Curtis to hold raffles during their events at Austin Sports and Social Club.

It was during these nights they met a couple, with one of them nominating the pair to be baton bearers.

Upon hearing the news of their selection for the relay, Stephen said he cried while Curtis was ecstatic.

Stephen described it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a perfect way to honour his wife.

“We have been through a loss so we know exactly the kind of anxiety people are going through,” he added.

“So if they are having a bad day then to see a smile on people’s faces makes everything we do worth it.”
