ONE of the largest park and ride schemes is set to open in Longbridge in the spring.
Commuters are being urged to use the multi-storey car park near the town’s railway station which boasts 629 spaces and is secured by CCTV.
The car park, which is five storeys high, cost £7.6million to build and has electric vehicle charging points, lifts and a range of fast and convenient ways to pay, including cash, contactless, credit and debit card.
The decision was taken to build the car park because of the links to Birmingham City Centre, Bromsgrove, Redditch and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Transport for West Midlands (TFWM) Laura Shoaf said: “Our existing park and ride facilities, which provide more than 8,800 spaces, have proved so popular that most are full to overflowing by 8am each morning.
“So we have built a multi-storey facility which means that commuters from the south of Birmingham can be sure they will be able to find a space no matter what time of day they travel.”
It will also help to give customers an alternative method of travel to the busy A38 Bristol Road.
The developer has been supported by the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) which contributed £1.8million towards the overall cost.
The car park will set drivers back £3 per day.
The West Midlands Combined Authority Board gave the car park the go ahead in February 2018, construction started last May.
