FRIENDS of St John’s are inviting residents to an upcoming talk on the Midlands’ role in the Gunpowder Plot.

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed assassination attempt against King James I by a group of provincial English Catholics who were led by Robert Catesby.

Author Philip Bowen will be at the event at St John’s Church on Tuesday, November 5 to speak about conspirators from Worcestershire and how local houses played a part in the story. He will also discuss what caused the plot, how close it came to success and consider its long-term legacy.

Tickets are available from Decanter Spirit on Bromsgrove High Street and are free for under 18s and £5 for adults.

The talk is being held to support the Friends of St John’s Heritage Future Appeal which looks to finance the ongoing maintenance and restoration needs at the landmark church.

More information can be found on the ‘Friends of St John’s’ Facebook page.
