POLICE are investigating whether the burning of railway cables in Bromsgrove which led to extensive delays was caused deliberately.
There were reports of the incident made to British Transport Police at 4am this morning and the damage caused meant trains on the Cross City Line have not been able to stop at the station all day and still cannot.
The trains are, instead, terminating at Longbridge with replacement buses ferrying passengers between there and Bromsgrove.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: “Cables, which are essential for the safe running of the railway, were damaged in the Bromsgrove area overnight on Monday.
“This affected trains on Tuesday and we are working to complete repairs as quickly as possible.
“The cause of the damage is unknown at this stage but we are working with British Transport Police.
“Passengers should check with National Rail Enquiries for the latest information.”
A British Transport Police spokesperson added: “Officers are currently making a number of enquiries to establish the cause of the burning, and whether this was caused deliberately.”
