THIS YEAR’S England-themed shop window decorating competition, held as part of the village’s annual St George’s Day celebrations has been won by Polly Put the Kettle On.

It was a keenly-fought contest and Susan O’Leary from the tea room was awarded first place based on the judges’ three main criteria of creativity, originality and impact.

Her display included a pictorial display of ‘famous Georges through the ages’ and a decorated cake featuring an image of St George, plus mini figures dressed as St George, along with flags and bunting.

Runners up included Age UK, Scissor Stitch and Ward Vintage and Retro.

Artwork contributions from Beaconside, Holywell and St James Primary Schools were displayed in many shop windows.

A popular coffee morning featuring a concert by Beaconside School Choir was held at St Chad’s Church on Friday morning, and there was a special St George’s Day service at the church on Sunday.
