Youngsters from Rednal Hill Junior School learn about gluten free foods

CHILDREN from Rednal Hill Junior School got busy in the kitchen on Tuesday to learn about food allergies and ingredients in what we eat, thanks to Genius Gluten Free founder Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne.

The workshops were held following research which revealed schoolchildren in the UK had a significant lack of knowledge and understanding about food and what was in it.

Genius has partnered with Allergy Adventures and the Anaphylaxis Campaign to help combat the problem.

A total of 30 year four children took part in the workshop which saw them create an allergy-free dish to take home. This event was the second in a series of workshops that will be held across the country to increase knowledge and awareness of food allergies amongst children.

The Genius research showed 80 per cent of British schoolchildren now had a classmate with an allergy but almost half (48 per cent) of the children surveyed in Birmingham claimed to have never been taught about food allergies by a teacher.

Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne, Founder of Genius Gluten Free, said: “These statistics show the reality of how little our children know about allergies and food ingredients.

“It is so important that children learn about different dietary requirements from a young age, and it’s equally important they are aware of the symptoms associated with different food allergies.”

She added she was delighted to be working with the partner organisations on the campaign.
