FIREFIGHTERS battled a serious blaze which broke out on the ground floor of a derelict building in Recreation Road, opposite the town’s Asda, today (Thursday).

Four crews – two from Bromsgrove and two from Redditch – were sent to the scene at 9.54am, because of the extent of the fire.

The police were also in attendance and the fire was extinguished by about 10.15am.

One witness who contacted The Standard said it was quite dramatic.

“I saw the smoke billowing out and then the four fire engines and police cars.

“They also asked any staff or customers in Asda who had parked their cars near the building to move their vehicles,” she added.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson told The Standard the incident was not being treated as arson.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.
