REVIEW - Friends! The Musical Parody at the Wolverhampton Grand is like a fun reunion and catch-up

COULD this be any more exciting? Friends! The Musical Parody has landed at The Wolverhampton Grand, bringing with it waves of laughter, nostalgia and a well-crafted tribute to one of the most iconic American sitcoms of all time.

As a big Friends fan growing up, I was dubious about seeing others take on the role of such beloved characters. All my doubts were cast aside however as under the direction of Michael Gyngell.

The actors all did a fine job of capturing the hearts of Rachel (Eva Hope), Ross (Enzo Benvenuti), Chandler  (Daniel Parkinson), Monica (Alicia Belgarde), Joey (Ronnie Burden), and Phoebe (Amelia Atherton) blending their quirks, chemistry, and chaos with a fresh, theatrical twist.

Set in a working TV studio complete with an MC warm up act (Edward Leigh) and actors doubling as crew, it made us feel like part of the studio audience from the original 90s recordings.

The book and witty lyrics by Bob and Tobly McSmith are clever re-imaginings of familiar tunes.  They add layer upon layer of fun as the musical seamlessly whirls through the highs, lows, and most iconic moments of Friends’ ten seasons. From Ross’s unforgettable “PIVOT” to the eternal debate over “We were on a break.”

Undoubtedly those new to Friends may find it all a little bewildering – a bit like Phoebe’s infamous songs on a good day. However, even Friends newbies like my dad, Euan Rose, could not help getting caught up in the electric atmosphere.

The Grand Theatre buzzed as fans took a trip down memory lane; ripples of laughter ricocheted around the auditorium as favourite lines landed and memories of beloved episodes came flooding back.

Warm, quirky and light-hearted – Friends! The Musical Parody is a must-see for any Friends fan. It’s like catching up with old pals, only this time, they are singing. It’s impossible not to leave with a smile on your face and the sudden urge to go home, curl up on the sofa, and put on an episode or three.

Friends! The Musical Parody runs at the Wolverhampton Grand until Saturday, October 18.
