FAMILIES attended a special event at Deelands Hall in Rubery on Saturday to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The 1940s family fun day featured a 1940s-themed buffet with ham, jam and cheese sandwiches, pork pie, tea and cakes.

The event was officially opened by Coun Adrian Delaney and the building was decorated in red, white and blue bunting and Union Flags.

Plenty of people wore fancy dress for the bash which was organised by Trident Reach in conjunction with the Northfield Community Partnership.
Gary Clarke, the Trident Reach general manager, and Connor Carpenter gave volunteered their time and provided the music for the day.

Jane Winson, from the Rubery Wombles, also prepared the community garden so children and families could take food out there for a traditional picnic.
There were also traditional games and activities, such as hula-hooping, skipping ropes and beanbags.

Other activities included painting for the children, while eight-year-old Ruby O’Kelly performed Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and Chloe Smith, 13, wrote her own thanksgiving prayer from all the young people.

Bernie McFall, from Trident Reach, said: “We had a steady flow of people throughout the day and everyone got into the spirit.
“I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who came along and to Adrian, Gary, Connor and Jane.”
The party was the brainchild of Mark Birkenshaw who came up with it when the year’s events for the hall were being discussed.
