RUBERY’S Matthew Tresigne is celebrating after he qualified to represent Great Britain in the European Dragon Boat Federation Championships in Rome.

Tresigne, a member of Pershore Phoenix dragon boat club, will take part in the under-24s category of the event which takes places at the end of July through to the start of August.

Tresigne will be joined up by fellow club members Andrew Forrest, Linda Morris and Emily Forrest who are in the Premier team and Michael Dacome who will feature for the under-18s team.

The five Phoenix aces began training for the GB team in 2015 and continued throughout the winter with whole weekends of training at various locations.

A final assessment is due in the very near future to finalise roles and boat positions and tasks for the European Championships.

The Pershore Phoenix dragon boat team train throughout the winter although, in comparison to the GB squad, things are a little less intense.

Club winter training features a dragon boat session at 9.30am every Sunday and an indoor training session in the week for those looking to keep the good work going, while in the summer there is a paddle on Wednesdays and on other days there are kayak sessions for those still with energy.

Pershore Phoenix race in the British Dragon Boat Racing Association Premier League and also take part in other events, regattas and social events.

There is a great social aspect to the club, which includes members from Pershore, Evesham, Stratford, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Droitwich, Redditch, Worcester, Stourbridge and Solihull and new faces are always welcome.

Membership age range is from 12 to 60 and people do not have to be fit or strong to join.

Members meet at 9.30am on Sundays and 7pm on Wednesdays evenings at Arden Sailing Club in Defford (WR8 9BS).
